Air source heat pump installation in Chard: what to expect

Homes around Chard range from older terraces to newer estates, and each needs a different design. That is why we survey before we quote.

Many homes in Chard have a side passage or rear garden with room for an outdoor unit, and the survey checks airflow and distance from neighbouring windows. In Chard, cylinder space is planned with you, often in an airing cupboard, utility room or garage.

We survey your home, design a heat pump system around its real heat loss, and manage the installation from the first visit to the MCS certificate.

  • Households with room for a hot water cylinder
  • Houses with reasonable insulation, or a plan to improve it

Homeowners across Somerset can arrange a survey in Chard for a room-by-room design and a written quote before committing to anything.

Grants and rules for heat pumps in England

England

In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Chard quote.

There is no VAT on installing a heat pump anywhere in the UK until 31 March 2027. In England most houses can have an air source heat pump under permitted development, provided the unit meets the MCS noise and siting standards; the old 1 m boundary limit was removed on 29 May 2025. We flag listed buildings, flats and sensitive conservation-area positions at survey.

Short winter days in Chard and what they mean

16 h 31 minDaylight on the longest day

50.87°NLatitude of Chard

On the shortest day Chard gets about 7 hours 56 minutes of daylight, and the winter sun reaches only around 16° above the horizon at noon. Winters this far south are milder than in most of the UK, which helps a heat pump run at low flow temperatures for much of the season.

The steps for air source heat pump installation in Chard

  1. Tell us about your home: postcode, property type and current heating.
  2. We book a survey in Chard; the surveyor measures rooms, windows and radiators and looks at cylinder space.
  3. The design and quote arrive in writing, including radiator changes and the outdoor unit position.
  4. On installation days the old system is removed and the new one fitted and filled.
  5. We commission the heat pump, show you the controls and register the installation.

Air source heat pump installation in Chard: questions

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump in Chard?

Often some, not all. Heat pumps run best at lower water temperatures, so rooms with small radiators may need larger ones. The survey of your Chard home gives a room-by-room list.

Where would the outdoor unit go on a Chard house?

Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Chard home.

Can you service a heat pump in Chard that someone else installed?

Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Chard, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.

How long does an air source heat pump installation take?

A typical home installation takes 2–4 days on site. It takes longer if several radiators are being replaced, pipework is being upgraded or the cylinder is going in a new location. Your quote sets out the expected programme, including when you will be without heating and hot water. Timings are typical rather than fixed, because older homes sometimes reveal surprises once floorboards are lifted.

Can I cancel after accepting the quote?

Nothing is ordered until you accept the written quote. Where the contract is agreed away from our premises, for example at your kitchen table, you can cancel within 14 days under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013. If you ask us to start sooner and then cancel, you pay only for work done up to that point.
