A heat pump service is an annual inspection and maintenance visit that checks the outdoor unit, the heating water circuit, the controls and the hot water cylinder are working safely and efficiently. Heat pumps have no burner or flue to inspect, but they rely on clean water flow, correct pressures and well-set controls, all of which can drift over a year.

Annual servicing is recommended for all heat pumps, and many manufacturers make it a condition of their warranty. A service record also helps if you sell the home or need to make a warranty claim. The service is a paid visit with a guide price of £120–£250, including VAT, and the price for your system is confirmed when you book.

We service systems installed through us and systems fitted by other companies, including monobloc and split units. If your heat pump was installed by someone else, tell us the make, model and age when you book so the engineer brings the right parts and information. Refrigerant work on split systems must be done by an F-gas certified engineer.

Who it suits

  • Heat pumps a year or more past installation
  • Systems where the manufacturer's warranty requires annual servicing
  • Heat pumps installed by another company that need a new servicing arrangement
  • Homes where running costs have crept up or rooms feel cooler than before
  • Landlords who need dated service records for each property

Things to consider

  • Servicing is a paid visit, and any parts or repairs found during it are priced before work goes ahead.
  • Some extended warranties require servicing by an installer approved by the manufacturer; check your warranty terms.
  • Split systems need refrigerant checks by an F-gas certified engineer.
  • Access around the outdoor unit should be clear, including any fencing, plants or covers.
  • Older or unfamiliar systems may need parts ordered after the first visit.

What is checked in a heat pump service?

A heat pump service checks the parts of the system that most affect safety, efficiency and reliability.

  • Outdoor unit: coil and fins cleaned of leaves and debris, fan and mountings inspected, condensate drain cleared
  • Water circuit: magnetic filter and strainers cleaned, system pressure and expansion vessel checked, water quality and inhibitor tested
  • Frost protection: antifreeze or glycol concentration tested where used, and antifreeze valves checked on monobloc systems
  • Refrigerant circuit (split systems): pipework, joints and operating pressures checked by an F-gas certified engineer
  • Defrost and performance: defrost operation, flow and return temperatures and the operating data logged
  • Controls: weather compensation curve, schedules and error history checked
  • Electrics: connections, isolators and protective devices inspected

Why does an unvented cylinder need checking?

An unvented cylinder needs an annual check because it stores hot water at mains pressure and relies on safety valves that must work if anything goes wrong. The service checks the temperature and pressure relief valve, the expansion vessel charge, the inlet controls and the tundish and discharge pipe. The legionella cycle setting and immersion heater are checked at the same time.

If you notice water dripping from the tundish or from the discharge pipe outside, arrange a visit rather than waiting for the next service.

Will servicing protect my warranty?

Regular servicing helps keep the manufacturer's warranty valid, because many warranties require an annual service with a dated record. Manufacturer warranties pass to you, and the length depends on the make and model; the conditions are set out in the warranty documents from your installation. Our workmanship guarantee is set out in writing in your quote.

Some manufacturers ask for servicing by an approved or registered installer to keep extended warranties in place. If your heat pump was installed by another company, check your warranty terms before booking, and we can tell you whether our visit meets them for your make.

Can you service a heat pump installed by someone else?

Yes, we can service heat pumps installed by other companies, including systems where the original installer is no longer trading. The first service on an unfamiliar system can take a little longer, as the engineer records the make, model, settings and layout and checks the installation against any design paperwork you have.

Where the first visit shows design problems, such as undersized radiators or a flow temperature set too high, we explain the options in writing. Simple control changes can often be made on the day; anything larger is quoted separately.

What's included

  • Cleaning of the outdoor unit coil, fan area and condensate drain
  • Magnetic filter and strainer clean, with system pressure topped up
  • Expansion vessel, pressure relief and water quality checks
  • Glycol or antifreeze protection test where fitted
  • Refrigerant circuit checks on split systems by an F-gas certified engineer
  • Unvented cylinder safety checks and legionella cycle check
  • Controls and error log check, with settings adjusted where needed
  • A dated service record for your warranty and property files

Heat pump servicing questions

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

Once a year is the usual recommendation for air source heat pumps, and many manufacturers require it as a warranty condition. An annual visit cleans filters and strainers, checks pressures and controls, and tests the unvented cylinder's safety devices. If you notice a drop in performance, unusual noises or repeated error codes between services, arrange a visit sooner.

How much does a heat pump service cost?

An annual heat pump service has a guide price of £120–£250, including VAT. Where your price sits depends on the type of system, whether it is a split system needing refrigerant checks and whether an unvented cylinder is included. Any parts or repairs found during the service are explained and priced before any work goes ahead.

What does a heat pump service not include?

A service covers inspection, cleaning, testing and adjustment. It does not include replacement parts, major repairs, system flushing or radiator changes, which are quoted separately if needed. If the engineer finds a fault, they explain what it is, what it would cost to fix and whether it needs doing now or can wait.

Do I need to do anything between services?

A little. Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear of leaves, snow, plants and stored items so air flows freely. Check the system pressure gauge occasionally if you have one, and note any error codes. Avoid covering the unit or building an enclosure around it without advice, as this can reduce performance.

Can you service a split system?

Yes. Split systems have refrigerant pipes running between the outdoor unit and an indoor unit, and checks on that refrigerant circuit must be done by an F-gas certified engineer. We arrange the service so a suitably certified engineer attends. The water side, controls and cylinder are checked in the same visit, just as on a monobloc system.

Is servicing needed to keep my warranty valid?

Often, yes. Many manufacturer warranties require an annual service with a dated record, and some extended warranties require an approved installer. Manufacturer warranties pass to you, and the length depends on the make and model. Check your warranty documents, and keep every service record safe with your MCS certificate and handover pack.
