Air-to-air heat pumps for Blackpool homes
Most homes can run on a heat pump if the system is designed properly, and Blackpool is no different. The key is matching the heat pump and radiators to the home's heat loss.
Top-floor rooms in Blackpool that overheat in summer gain from the cooling an air-to-air system provides. Flats in Blackpool on storage or panel heaters can often switch to air-to-air without fitting radiators or pipework.
An air-to-air heat pump warms rooms directly with air, and can cool them in summer, but it does not heat your hot water.
- Rooms that get too hot in summer as well as cold in winter
- Households that already have, or will add, a separate source of hot water
- Extensions, conservatories and garden rooms
What's included
- Commissioning, MCS certificate and the air-to-air grant claim in England and Wales where eligible
- Electrical supply and controls set up for each room
- Condensate drains and neat external pipe covers
- Outdoor unit and indoor units for each room
- Free survey covering rooms to heat, unit positions and hot water options
Installers in Blackpool plan condensate drains and pipe covers so indoor and outdoor runs stay neat.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
Homes in Blackpool can use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which takes £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump when it replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating. Replacing oil or LPG heating qualifies for £9,000 for installations from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, and air-to-air systems for £2,500. The MCS-certified installer named in your quote applies for the grant and deducts it from the price.
Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.
Air-to-air heat pumps costs around Blackpool
Guide prices for Blackpool and the rest of Lancashire are shown below, installed and inc VAT. We publish ranges rather than a single figure because design details move the price, and the written quote after survey fixes it.
| System | Installed guide price |
|---|---|
| Air-to-air heat pump, 1–2 rooms | £2,350–£4,900 |
| Air-to-air heat pump, multi-room 3–4 bedroom home | £3,900–£7,850 |
Installed, inc VAT. Air-to-air systems heat (and can cool) rooms but do not provide hot water. In England and Wales the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £2,500 towards an air-to-air system in a home, deducted from your quote where eligible.
How long is the heating season in Blackpool?
Blackpool sees roughly 7 hours 24 minutes of daylight in December and 17 hours 06 minutes in June. With a longer heating season than the south, the gains from low flow temperatures and good controls add up over the year.
What happens after you enquire in Blackpool?
- Tell us about your home: postcode, property type and current heating.
- We book a survey in Blackpool; the surveyor measures rooms, windows and radiators and looks at cylinder space.
- The design and quote arrive in writing, including radiator changes and the outdoor unit position.
- On installation days the old system is removed and the new one fitted and filled.
- We commission the heat pump, show you the controls and register the installation.
Air-to-air heat pumps in Blackpool: questions
Can you service a heat pump in Blackpool that someone else installed?
Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Blackpool, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.
What size heat pump does a Blackpool home need?
It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your Blackpool home.
Do I need new radiators for a heat pump in Blackpool?
Often some, not all. Heat pumps run best at lower water temperatures, so rooms with small radiators may need larger ones. The survey of your Blackpool home gives a room-by-room list.
Is there a grant for air-to-air heat pumps?
In England and Wales, yes: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme includes a grant of £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps in homes, from 28 April 2026. The MCS-certified installer applies to Ofgem and deducts it from your quote, subject to the scheme's conditions. The scheme does not cover Scotland or Northern Ireland; in Scotland, Home Energy Scotland has its own rules.
How much sound do the indoor units make?
Indoor units are designed to run quietly, with a fan you will hear most when heating or cooling at full output. Lower fan settings and night modes reduce sound in bedrooms. Siting matters for the outdoor unit too: it needs airflow and a position that passes the MCS noise assessment. Ask to see the sound levels of the proposed units at survey.
