Air-to-air heat pumps for Boston homes

A heat pump suits most Boston homes, but the details decide how efficiently it runs. Our survey looks at insulation, radiators and hot water use room by room.

Flats in Boston on storage or panel heaters can often switch to air-to-air without fitting radiators or pipework. Extensions and garden rooms in Boston that are hard to connect to the main heating can have their own air-to-air unit.

An air-to-air heat pump warms rooms directly with air, and can cool them in summer, but it does not heat your hot water.

  • Rooms that get too hot in summer as well as cold in winter
  • Extensions, conservatories and garden rooms
  • Flats and apartments with storage or panel heaters

What's included

  • Outdoor unit and indoor units for each room
  • Refrigerant pipe runs to each indoor unit, made and charged by an F-gas certified engineer
  • Condensate drains and neat external pipe covers
  • Commissioning, MCS certificate and the air-to-air grant claim in England and Wales where eligible
  • Free survey covering rooms to heat, unit positions and hot water options

For terraced homes in Boston, the outdoor unit can often sit in a rear yard with tidy pipe runs to each room.

Grants and rules for heat pumps in England

England

In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Boston quote.

Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.

What to budget for air-to-air heat pumps in Boston

These are guide prices for Lincolnshire, installed and including VAT. Your final price is fixed in a written quote after the survey and depends on the heat loss of the house, the radiators that need changing and where the unit goes.

7 h 34 minDaylight on the shortest day
16 h 56 minDaylight on the longest day
14°Noon sun height in December
52.98°NLatitude of Boston

On the shortest day Boston gets about 7 hours 34 minutes of daylight, with the noon sun around 14° up. The heating season runs from autumn into spring, so a heat pump that is sized correctly and set up with weather compensation does most of its work in steady, cool conditions.

What happens after you enquire in Boston?

  1. Tell us about your home: postcode, property type and current heating.
  2. We book a survey in Boston; the surveyor measures rooms, windows and radiators and looks at cylinder space.
  3. The design and quote arrive in writing, including radiator changes and the outdoor unit position.
  4. On installation days the old system is removed and the new one fitted and filled.
  5. We commission the heat pump, show you the controls and register the installation.

Air-to-air heat pumps in Boston: questions

Where would the outdoor unit go on a Boston house?

Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Boston home.

How long does a heat pump survey take in Boston?

A home survey in Boston usually takes one to two hours. The surveyor measures every heated room, checks windows, walls and radiators, and looks at where the outdoor unit and cylinder can go.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump in Boston?

Often some, not all. Heat pumps run best at lower water temperatures, so rooms with small radiators may need larger ones. The survey of your Boston home gives a room-by-room list.

Is there a grant for air-to-air heat pumps?

In England and Wales, yes: the Boiler Upgrade Scheme includes a grant of £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps in homes, from 28 April 2026. The MCS-certified installer applies to Ofgem and deducts it from your quote, subject to the scheme's conditions. The scheme does not cover Scotland or Northern Ireland; in Scotland, Home Energy Scotland has its own rules.

Are air-to-air heat pumps suitable for flats?

Often, yes. They need no radiators, pipework or cylinder, so they suit flats heated by storage or panel heaters. You need a position for the outdoor unit, such as a balcony, wall bracket or ground-floor yard, and leaseholders normally need the freeholder's or management company's consent. Planning rules for flats differ by nation, so we check what applies at survey.
