What to know about air-to-air heat pumps in Tamworth

The question for a Tamworth home is rarely whether a heat pump can work, but what needs to change to make it work well: radiator sizes, pipework, controls and where the unit goes.

Extensions and garden rooms in Tamworth that are hard to connect to the main heating can have their own air-to-air unit. Top-floor rooms in Tamworth that overheat in summer gain from the cooling an air-to-air system provides.

An air-to-air heat pump warms rooms directly with air, and can cool them in summer, but it does not heat your hot water.

  • Flats and apartments with storage or panel heaters
  • Homes where fitting radiators and pipework would be very disruptive
  • Rooms that get too hot in summer as well as cold in winter

What's included

  • Outdoor unit and indoor units for each room
  • Electrical supply and controls set up for each room
  • Free survey covering rooms to heat, unit positions and hot water options
  • Condensate drains and neat external pipe covers
  • Refrigerant pipe runs to each indoor unit, made and charged by an F-gas certified engineer

Installers in Tamworth plan condensate drains and pipe covers so indoor and outdoor runs stay neat.

Grants and rules for heat pumps in England

England

In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Tamworth quote.

There is no VAT on installing a heat pump anywhere in the UK until 31 March 2027. In England most houses can have an air source heat pump under permitted development, provided the unit meets the MCS noise and siting standards; the old 1 m boundary limit was removed on 29 May 2025. We flag listed buildings, flats and sensitive conservation-area positions at survey.

Designing for Tamworth's winters

7 h 38 minDaylight on the shortest day
16 h 51 minDaylight on the longest day
14°Noon sun height in December
52.63°NLatitude of Tamworth

Tamworth has about 7 hours 38 minutes of daylight at midwinter and 16 hours 51 minutes at midsummer. That swing matters if you pair a heat pump with solar panels: summer generation can cover much of the hot water, winter generation far less.

How installation works in Tamworth

  1. Send your postcode and a few details, or use the guide price tool.
  2. A surveyor visits your Tamworth home, measures every room and checks where the outdoor unit can go.
  3. You receive a heat loss design and a fixed written quote, with any grant shown where it applies.
  4. Installers fit the unit, cylinder and any radiator changes, typically over 2–4 days on site.
  5. The system is commissioned, set up with weather compensation and handed over with the paperwork.

Air-to-air heat pumps in Tamworth: questions

Do you cover Lichfield as well as Tamworth?

Yes. We arrange surveys and installation in Lichfield, which is about 6 miles north-west of Tamworth, and across Staffordshire.

What size heat pump does a Tamworth home need?

It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your Tamworth home.

Can you service a heat pump in Tamworth that someone else installed?

Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Tamworth, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.

Can an air-to-air heat pump heat my water?

No. An air-to-air heat pump heats and cools the air in rooms but does not produce hot water. You need a separate source, such as an existing immersion cylinder, a hot water heat pump or an electric water heater. If you want one system for heating and hot water, an air-to-water heat pump with a cylinder is the alternative.

Are air-to-air heat pumps suitable for flats?

Often, yes. They need no radiators, pipework or cylinder, so they suit flats heated by storage or panel heaters. You need a position for the outdoor unit, such as a balcony, wall bracket or ground-floor yard, and leaseholders normally need the freeholder's or management company's consent. Planning rules for flats differ by nation, so we check what applies at survey.
