What to know about replacing a gas boiler with a heat pump in Nottingham
Homes around Nottingham range from older terraces to newer estates, and each needs a different design. That is why we survey before we quote.
If your Nottingham home still cooks on gas, we talk through whether to keep the supply or switch to an induction hob. Many gas-heated homes in Nottingham have a combi boiler in the kitchen, so the survey starts by finding the right place for a cylinder.
Moving from mains gas to a heat pump means finding cylinder space, deciding what happens to the gas supply and comparing running costs on realistic assumptions.
- System or regular boiler homes with an existing airing cupboard
- Combi owners who can find space for a hot water cylinder
- Homes in England and Wales eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
What's included
- Free survey with heat loss calculation and cylinder siting
- System flush and radiator upgrades where the design calls for them
- Capping of the gas pipe at the boiler position where you are giving up gas
- Removal of the gas boiler, flue and any loft tanks
- Commissioning, MCS certificate and grant application in England and Wales where eligible
Rear gardens and side returns in Nottingham usually offer a sensible spot for the outdoor unit, checked for airflow and neighbours.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Nottingham quote.
Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.

Designing for Nottingham's winters
Nottingham has about 7 hours 34 minutes of daylight at midwinter and 16 hours 55 minutes at midsummer. That swing matters if you pair a heat pump with solar panels: summer generation can cover much of the hot water, winter generation far less.

Replacing a gas boiler with a heat pump in Nottingham: questions
Do you cover Arnold as well as Nottingham?
Yes. We arrange surveys and installation in Arnold, which is about 3 miles north of Nottingham, and across Nottinghamshire.
How long does installation take in Nottingham?
Most installations take 2–4 days on site. Jobs with several radiator changes or new pipework take longer, and your quote for a Nottingham home states the expected time.
What size heat pump does a Nottingham home need?
It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your Nottingham home.
Can a heat pump replace a combi boiler?
Yes, but you need room for a hot water cylinder, because heat pumps store hot water rather than heating it on demand. Most homes find a space in a cupboard, utility room, garage or under the stairs, and compact or combined indoor units help where space is tight. The survey measures the options first, so you know where everything will go before you accept the quote.
Will my hot water run out with a heat pump?
Not if the cylinder is sized properly for your household. The survey asks how many people live in the home, how many bathrooms you have and whether you prefer baths or showers, then sizes the cylinder to suit. The heat pump reheats the cylinder on a schedule, often overnight and again during the day, and an immersion heater acts as a backup.
