Heat loss survey in Falmouth: what to expect

Homes around Falmouth range from older terraces to newer estates, and each needs a different design. That is why we survey before we quote.

Houses in Falmouth built in different eras can need very different heat pump sizes, which is why each is calculated room by room. A surveyor visits your Falmouth home to measure each room, window and wall before any heat pump is sized.

Every heat pump we quote starts with a room-by-room heat loss survey, free with installation enquiries and also available as a stand-alone report.

  • Anyone getting a heat pump quote, as the first step
  • Landlords comparing properties before deciding where to switch first
  • Homes with an existing heat pump that seems undersized or expensive to run

What's included

  • Room-by-room heat loss calculation using the MCS method
  • Hot water cylinder sizing for your household
  • Written results in your quote, or a stand-alone report if you order one
  • Electrical supply and network operator notes
  • Radiator schedule with any upgrades needed for each room

Homeowners in Falmouth thinking about insulation work can use the survey to see how it would change their heat pump size.

Grants and rules for heat pumps in England

England

In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Falmouth quote.

Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.

On the shortest day Falmouth gets about 8 hours 03 minutes of daylight, and the winter sun reaches only around 16° above the horizon at noon. Winters this far south are milder than in most of the UK, which helps a heat pump run at low flow temperatures for much of the season.

Heat loss surveys in Falmouth: questions

What size heat pump does a Falmouth home need?

It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your Falmouth home.

Can you service a heat pump in Falmouth that someone else installed?

Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Falmouth, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump in Falmouth?

Often some, not all. Heat pumps run best at lower water temperatures, so rooms with small radiators may need larger ones. The survey of your Falmouth home gives a room-by-room list.

Is the heat loss survey free?

Yes, for installation enquiries the home survey and heat loss calculation are free, and the results form the basis of your written quote. If you only want the calculation and report, for example for building plans or comparing quotes, a stand-alone heat loss survey has a guide price of £150–£400, including VAT. We confirm which applies when you book.

Will the survey check noise from the outdoor unit?

Yes. The surveyor identifies possible positions for the outdoor unit and carries out the MCS noise assessment, which estimates the sound level at the nearest neighbouring window from the unit's sound power level, distance and any barriers. In England, meeting the MCS planning standards is one of the conditions for permitted development. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules, which we check.
