Heat loss survey in Brighton

If you live in Brighton and are considering heat loss surveys, the first step is a survey that measures each room. That design sets the size of the heat pump and the price in your written quote.

Heat loss survey for Brighton homes

Homes around Brighton range from older terraces to newer estates, and each needs a different design. That is why we survey before we quote.

A surveyor visits your Brighton home to measure each room, window and wall before any heat pump is sized. Design outdoor temperatures for Brighton and the wider East Sussex come from local cold-weather data, not a national average.

Every heat pump we quote starts with a room-by-room heat loss survey, free with installation enquiries and also available as a stand-alone report.

  • Self-builders and architects who need emitter and system sizes early
  • Homes with an existing heat pump that seems undersized or expensive to run
  • Anyone getting a heat pump quote, as the first step

What's included

  • Written results in your quote, or a stand-alone report if you order one
  • Room-by-room heat loss calculation using the MCS method
  • Outdoor unit siting options and noise check
  • Radiator schedule with any upgrades needed for each room
  • Electrical supply and network operator notes

For Brighton homes with extensions or loft conversions, each part of the house is assessed on its own construction.

Grants and rules for heat pumps in England

England

Homes in Brighton can use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which takes £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump when it replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating. Replacing oil or LPG heating qualifies for £9,000 for installations from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, and air-to-air systems for £2,500. The MCS-certified installer named in your quote applies for the grant and deducts it from the price.

There is no VAT on installing a heat pump anywhere in the UK until 31 March 2027. In England most houses can have an air source heat pump under permitted development, provided the unit meets the MCS noise and siting standards; the old 1 m boundary limit was removed on 29 May 2025. We flag listed buildings, flats and sensitive conservation-area positions at survey.

Winter daylight and heating in Brighton

16 h 31 minDaylight on the longest day
16°Noon sun height in December
50.83°NLatitude of Brighton

On the shortest day Brighton gets about 7 hours 56 minutes of daylight, and the winter sun reaches only around 16° above the horizon at noon. Winters this far south are milder than in most of the UK, which helps a heat pump run at low flow temperatures for much of the season.

The steps for heat loss surveys in Brighton

  1. Send your postcode and a few details, or use the guide price tool.
  2. A surveyor visits your Brighton home, measures every room and checks where the outdoor unit can go.
  3. You receive a heat loss design and a fixed written quote, with any grant shown where it applies.
  4. Installers fit the unit, cylinder and any radiator changes, typically over 2–4 days on site.
  5. The system is commissioned, set up with weather compensation and handed over with the paperwork.

Heat loss surveys in Brighton: questions

Do you cover Peacehaven as well as Brighton?

Yes. We arrange surveys and installation in Peacehaven, which is about 6 miles south-east of Brighton, and across East Sussex.

How long does installation take in Brighton?

Most installations take 2–4 days on site. Jobs with several radiator changes or new pipework take longer, and your quote for a Brighton home states the expected time.

Do I need new radiators for a heat pump in Brighton?

Often some, not all. Heat pumps run best at lower water temperatures, so rooms with small radiators may need larger ones. The survey of your Brighton home gives a room-by-room list.

Can I use the heat loss report to get other quotes?

Yes. A stand-alone heat loss report is yours to use, including sharing it with other installers so their quotes are based on the same figures. Comparing quotes like for like makes it easier to see differences in equipment, radiator upgrades and workmanship terms. The report states the assumptions used wherever construction could not be confirmed.

Is the heat loss survey free?

Yes, for installation enquiries the home survey and heat loss calculation are free, and the results form the basis of your written quote. If you only want the calculation and report, for example for building plans or comparing quotes, a stand-alone heat loss survey has a guide price of £150–£400, including VAT. We confirm which applies when you book.
