Oil and LPG boiler replacement for Bridport homes

Homes around Bridport range from older terraces to newer estates, and each needs a different design. That is why we survey before we quote.

For homes outside Bridport reached by a long drive or narrow lane, delivery of the unit and cylinder is planned in advance. Bungalows and detached houses near Bridport running on LPG can move to a heat pump, with the tank collected by the supplier.

Off-gas homes have a lot to plan when switching to a heat pump: the fuel tank, older walls, rural power supplies and higher heat loss.

  • Owners tired of fuel deliveries and tank maintenance
  • Detached houses and bungalows with garden space for the unit
  • Rural and village homes off the mains gas grid

What's included

  • Oil tank draining and removal or making safe, as set out in your quote
  • Help arranging LPG tank collection with your supplier
  • Network operator notification and electrical connection
  • Free survey with a detailed heat loss calculation for older construction
  • MCS certificate and grant application in England and Wales where eligible

Owners across Dorset can have oil tank removal arranged alongside a heat pump installation in Bridport.

Grants and rules for heat pumps in England

England

In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Bridport quote.

Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.

Short winter days in Bridport and what they mean

7 h 57 minDaylight on the shortest day
16 h 30 minDaylight on the longest day
16°Noon sun height in December
50.73°NLatitude of Bridport

On the shortest day Bridport gets about 7 hours 57 minutes of daylight, and the winter sun reaches only around 16° above the horizon at noon. Winters this far south are milder than in most of the UK, which helps a heat pump run at low flow temperatures for much of the season.

Replacing an oil or LPG boiler with a heat pump in Bridport: questions

What size heat pump does a Bridport home need?

It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your Bridport home.

Where would the outdoor unit go on a Bridport house?

Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Bridport home.

Can you service a heat pump in Bridport that someone else installed?

Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Bridport, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.

What happens with a leased LPG tank?

Leased LPG tanks belong to the supplier, so the supplier arranges collection. Check your contract for notice periods and any charges before you fix a date. We time the switchover so you are not left without heating, and once the heat pump is commissioned the supplier can empty and remove the tank. Bottled LPG cylinders are simply returned.

How much is the grant for replacing an oil boiler with a heat pump?

In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is £9,000 when an air-to-water heat pump replaces oil or LPG heating, for installations from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. Otherwise the standard £7,500 applies. The installer claims it and deducts it from your quote. Scotland's Home Energy Scotland funding works differently and includes extra for eligible rural homes; Northern Ireland has no dedicated homeowner scheme at present.
