Before you book: replacing an oil or LPG boiler with a heat pump in Sandwich
Homes around Sandwich range from older terraces to newer estates, and each needs a different design. That is why we survey before we quote.
If your home near Sandwich is off the mains gas grid, a heat pump removes the need for oil or LPG deliveries. Cottages and farmhouses in and around Sandwich often have solid walls, so the survey looks closely at construction and draughts.
Off-gas homes have a lot to plan when switching to a heat pump: the fuel tank, older walls, rural power supplies and higher heat loss.
- Detached houses and bungalows with garden space for the unit
- Owners tired of fuel deliveries and tank maintenance
- Rural and village homes off the mains gas grid
What's included
- Free survey with a detailed heat loss calculation for older construction
- Help arranging LPG tank collection with your supplier
- Oil tank draining and removal or making safe, as set out in your quote
- MCS certificate and grant application in England and Wales where eligible
- Network operator notification and electrical connection
Owners across Kent can have oil tank removal arranged alongside a heat pump installation in Sandwich.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Sandwich quote.
Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.

Short winter days in Sandwich and what they mean
On the shortest day Sandwich gets about 7 hours 52 minutes of daylight, and the winter sun reaches only around 15° above the horizon at noon. Winters this far south are milder than in most of the UK, which helps a heat pump run at low flow temperatures for much of the season.

- Tell us about your home: postcode, property type and current heating.

Replacing an oil or LPG boiler with a heat pump in Sandwich: questions
What size heat pump does a Sandwich home need?
It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your Sandwich home.
Do you cover Deal as well as Sandwich?
Yes. We arrange surveys and installation in Deal, which is about 4 miles south-east of Sandwich, and across Kent.
Where would the outdoor unit go on a Sandwich house?
Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Sandwich home.
Can a heat pump cope with an exposed rural spot?
Yes. Air source heat pumps are designed to keep working well below freezing, and they periodically defrost, giving off a little vapour, which is normal. In exposed locations the installer chooses a sheltered position where possible, raises the unit to clear snow and let defrost water drain, and sizes the system for the local winter design temperature used in the heat loss calculation.
What happens with a leased LPG tank?
Leased LPG tanks belong to the supplier, so the supplier arranges collection. Check your contract for notice periods and any charges before you fix a date. We time the switchover so you are not left without heating, and once the heat pump is commissioned the supplier can empty and remove the tank. Bottled LPG cylinders are simply returned.
