Before you book: heat loss surveys in Wimbledon

A heat pump suits most Wimbledon homes, but the details decide how efficiently it runs. Our survey looks at insulation, radiators and hot water use room by room.

Design outdoor temperatures for Wimbledon and the wider Greater London come from local cold-weather data, not a national average. A surveyor visits your Wimbledon home to measure each room, window and wall before any heat pump is sized.

Every heat pump we quote starts with a room-by-room heat loss survey, free with installation enquiries and also available as a stand-alone report.

  • Self-builders and architects who need emitter and system sizes early
  • Landlords comparing properties before deciding where to switch first
  • Homes with an existing heat pump that seems undersized or expensive to run

What's included

  • Hot water cylinder sizing for your household
  • Room-by-room heat loss calculation using the MCS method
  • Written results in your quote, or a stand-alone report if you order one
  • Outdoor unit siting options and noise check
  • Radiator schedule with any upgrades needed for each room

For Wimbledon homes with extensions or loft conversions, each part of the house is assessed on its own construction.

Grants and rules for heat pumps in England

England

In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Wimbledon quote.

There is no VAT on installing a heat pump anywhere in the UK until 31 March 2027. In England most houses can have an air source heat pump under permitted development, provided the unit meets the MCS noise and siting standards; the old 1 m boundary limit was removed on 29 May 2025. We flag listed buildings, flats and sensitive conservation-area positions at survey.

Wimbledon sees roughly 7 hours 50 minutes of daylight in late December against 16 hours 37 minutes in June. Milder southern winters suit heat pumps well, though the system is still sized for a cold snap rather than an average day.

The steps for heat loss surveys in Wimbledon

  1. Send your postcode and a few details, or use the guide price tool.
  2. A surveyor visits your Wimbledon home, measures every room and checks where the outdoor unit can go.
  3. You receive a heat loss design and a fixed written quote, with any grant shown where it applies.
  4. Installers fit the unit, cylinder and any radiator changes, typically over 2–4 days on site.
  5. The system is commissioned, set up with weather compensation and handed over with the paperwork.

Heat loss surveys in Wimbledon: questions

Where would the outdoor unit go on a Wimbledon house?

Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Wimbledon home.

How long does a heat pump survey take in Wimbledon?

A home survey in Wimbledon usually takes one to two hours. The surveyor measures every heated room, checks windows, walls and radiators, and looks at where the outdoor unit and cylinder can go.

Can you service a heat pump in Wimbledon that someone else installed?

Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Wimbledon, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.

Why can't you size the heat pump from my boiler?

Boilers are often much larger than a home's real heat loss, because they are sized for fast hot water and quick warm-ups. Matching a heat pump to the boiler's output usually means an oversized unit that costs more and switches on and off too often. A room-by-room calculation finds the actual heat demand, which is what the heat pump needs to meet.

How long does a heat loss survey take?

A typical survey takes 1–3 hours on site, depending on the size and complexity of the home. Larger or older houses with mixed construction, extensions or many rooms take longer. The calculations and design are completed afterwards, and the results are included in your quote or stand-alone report.
