Heat pump radiators for Cambridge homes
Every property in Cambridge is different, so the design starts from measurements rather than a rule of thumb. That keeps the system the right size and the running costs predictable.
Many older houses in Cambridge still have their original single-panel radiators, so the survey checks each one against the room it heats. Extensions and kitchen-diners around Cambridge with large glazed areas get their own radiator calculation.
We size each radiator to your room-by-room heat loss so a heat pump can heat your home at a low, efficient flow temperature.
- Homeowners who want the lowest practical flow temperature for efficiency
- Extensions and loft conversions with large areas of glazing
- Homes switching from a gas, oil or LPG boiler to a heat pump
What's included
- Pipework checks and any agreed pipe upgrades
- Room-by-room heat loss figures for every heated room
- Making good around brackets and pipe routes, with any decorating agreed in your quote
- Draining, refilling, cleaning and inhibitor treatment of the heating system
- A radiator schedule showing which radiators stay, which change and their outputs
We plan radiator upgrades in Cambridge so floorboards are lifted only where pipework genuinely needs changing.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
Homes in Cambridge can use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which takes £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump when it replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating. Replacing oil or LPG heating qualifies for £9,000 for installations from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, and air-to-air systems for £2,500. The MCS-certified installer named in your quote applies for the grant and deducts it from the price.
There is no VAT on installing a heat pump anywhere in the UK until 31 March 2027. In England most houses can have an air source heat pump under permitted development, provided the unit meets the MCS noise and siting standards; the old 1 m boundary limit was removed on 29 May 2025. We flag listed buildings, flats and sensitive conservation-area positions at survey.
Guide prices for heat pump radiator upgrades in Cambridge
The ranges below are typical installed prices for homes in Cambridgeshire, including VAT. A survey sets the exact figure, because two similar-looking houses in Cambridge can need quite different radiators and pipework.
| Work | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Replacement radiator, sized for a heat pump (each, fitted) | £260–£460 |
| Upgrade of about 10 radiators | £2,050–£5,100 |
| Pipework upgrade (e.g. microbore to larger bore) | £1,550–£3,550 |
Installed, inc VAT. The survey lists which radiators need changing.
Winter daylight and heating in Cambridge
On the shortest day Cambridge gets about 7 hours 42 minutes of daylight, with the noon sun around 14° up. The heating season runs from autumn into spring, so a heat pump that is sized correctly and set up with weather compensation does most of its work in steady, cool conditions.
From survey to switch-on in Cambridge
- Send your postcode and a few details, or use the guide price tool.
- A surveyor visits your Cambridge home, measures every room and checks where the outdoor unit can go.
- You receive a heat loss design and a fixed written quote, with any grant shown where it applies.
- Installers fit the unit, cylinder and any radiator changes, typically over 2–4 days on site.
- The system is commissioned, set up with weather compensation and handed over with the paperwork.
Heat pump radiator upgrades in Cambridge: questions
Can you service a heat pump in Cambridge that someone else installed?
Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Cambridge, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.
Where would the outdoor unit go on a Cambridge house?
Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Cambridge home.
What size heat pump does a Cambridge home need?
It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your Cambridge home.
Can I keep my radiators and just run the heat pump hotter?
You can, but it usually costs more to run. Every extra degree of flow temperature reduces a heat pump's efficiency, so a system designed at 55°C uses noticeably more electricity than one at 45°C for the same heat. A few well-chosen radiator upgrades often let the whole house run cooler, which is the better long-term trade.
Can radiators be changed without draining the whole system?
Radiator changes normally mean draining the heating system, which is why they are usually done as part of the heat pump installation. The system is then refilled, flushed, treated with inhibitor and balanced. Doing the radiators at the same time avoids draining twice and means the new radiators are commissioned with the heat pump.
