What to know about heat pump radiator upgrades in March
Every property in March is different, so the design starts from measurements rather than a rule of thumb. That keeps the system the right size and the running costs predictable.
Many older houses in March still have their original single-panel radiators, so the survey checks each one against the room it heats. For period homes in March and across Cambridgeshire, column radiators can keep the character of a room while giving enough heat at low temperatures.
We size each radiator to your room-by-room heat loss so a heat pump can heat your home at a low, efficient flow temperature.
- Rooms with little wall space, where a fan-assisted radiator fits better
- Homes switching from a gas, oil or LPG boiler to a heat pump
- Extensions and loft conversions with large areas of glazing
What's included
- Room-by-room heat loss figures for every heated room
- Pipework checks and any agreed pipe upgrades
- A radiator schedule showing which radiators stay, which change and their outputs
- Balancing every radiator so each room heats evenly
- Draining, refilling, cleaning and inhibitor treatment of the heating system
Radiator fitting in March is scheduled with your heat pump installation so the system is drained only once.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your March quote.
There is no VAT on installing a heat pump anywhere in the UK until 31 March 2027. In England most houses can have an air source heat pump under permitted development, provided the unit meets the MCS noise and siting standards; the old 1 m boundary limit was removed on 29 May 2025. We flag listed buildings, flats and sensitive conservation-area positions at survey.

How long is the heating season in March?
On the shortest day March gets about 7 hours 39 minutes of daylight, with the noon sun around 14° up. The heating season runs from autumn into spring, so a heat pump that is sized correctly and set up with weather compensation does most of its work in steady, cool conditions.
The steps for heat pump radiator upgrades in March
- Tell us about your home: postcode, property type and current heating.
- We book a survey in March; the surveyor measures rooms, windows and radiators and looks at cylinder space.
- The design and quote arrive in writing, including radiator changes and the outdoor unit position.
- On installation days the old system is removed and the new one fitted and filled.
- We commission the heat pump, show you the controls and register the installation.
Heat pump radiator upgrades in March: questions
Where would the outdoor unit go on a March house?
Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your March home.
What size heat pump does a March home need?
It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your March home.
Can you service a heat pump in March that someone else installed?
Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in March, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.
How much does a heat pump radiator cost?
A replacement radiator sized for a heat pump has a guide price of £250–£450 each, installed and including VAT. Upgrading about ten radiators in a typical home has a guide price of £2,000–£5,000. The final price is fixed in your written quote after the survey, once the radiator schedule shows exactly which radiators change.
Will new radiators be much bigger than my old ones?
Sometimes, but not always. Swapping a single-panel radiator for a double or triple-panel model of the same height and width can raise output substantially, adding only depth from the wall. Where that is not enough, a longer or taller radiator, or a second radiator in the room, may be needed. We agree sizes and positions with you before anything is ordered.
