Heat pump servicing for March homes

Aftercare matters as much as installation. For a heat pump in March the visit checks the outdoor unit, the water circuit and the controls, and the engineer explains any settings that would help the system run more efficiently.

Service visits in March include unvented cylinder safety checks alongside the heat pump itself. Homes in March and across Cambridgeshire can book servicing at a time of year that suits them, ideally before winter.

An annual service keeps a heat pump running efficiently, catches small faults early and is often a condition of the manufacturer's warranty.

  • Heat pumps a year or more past installation
  • Systems where the manufacturer's warranty requires annual servicing
  • Landlords who need dated service records for each property

What's included

  • Expansion vessel, pressure relief and water quality checks
  • Glycol or antifreeze protection test where fitted
  • Unvented cylinder safety checks and legionella cycle check
  • Controls and error log check, with settings adjusted where needed
  • Cleaning of the outdoor unit coil, fan area and condensate drain

If a heat pump in March has not been serviced for a while, the first visit includes a full check of settings and pressures.

Grants and rules for heat pumps in England

England

In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your March quote.

March has about 7 hours 39 minutes of daylight at midwinter and 16 hours 50 minutes at midsummer. That swing matters if you pair a heat pump with solar panels: summer generation can cover much of the hot water, winter generation far less.

Heat pump servicing in March: questions

What should I check before booking a visit in March?

Note any error code on the controller, check the system pressure gauge if you have one, and make sure the outdoor unit is clear of leaves or snow. Photos of the unit and controller help.

How much does a visit cost in March?

The rate for a service or fault-finding visit is agreed before anyone attends. Any repair is priced in writing before parts are ordered, so you decide before work goes ahead.

Will the engineer need access indoors as well as outside?

Usually yes. The outdoor unit, the hot water cylinder, the controls and the pipework and valves indoors are all part of the visit, so allow access to each.

Can you service a split system?

Yes. Split systems have refrigerant pipes running between the outdoor unit and an indoor unit, and checks on that refrigerant circuit must be done by an F-gas certified engineer. We arrange the service so a suitably certified engineer attends. The water side, controls and cylinder are checked in the same visit, just as on a monobloc system.

How often should a heat pump be serviced?

Once a year is the usual recommendation for air source heat pumps, and many manufacturers require it as a warranty condition. An annual visit cleans filters and strainers, checks pressures and controls, and tests the unvented cylinder's safety devices. If you notice a drop in performance, unusual noises or repeated error codes between services, arrange a visit sooner.
