Before you book: heat pump radiator upgrades in Chelsea
Homes around Chelsea range from older terraces to newer estates, and each needs a different design. That is why we survey before we quote.
Many older houses in Chelsea still have their original single-panel radiators, so the survey checks each one against the room it heats. In Chelsea, bay-windowed front rooms are often the rooms that need a larger radiator when moving to a heat pump.
We size each radiator to your room-by-room heat loss so a heat pump can heat your home at a low, efficient flow temperature.
- Extensions and loft conversions with large areas of glazing
- Rooms that already feel slow to heat, such as bay-windowed living rooms
- Homes switching from a gas, oil or LPG boiler to a heat pump
What's included
- Pipework checks and any agreed pipe upgrades
- Room-by-room heat loss figures for every heated room
- A radiator schedule showing which radiators stay, which change and their outputs
- Making good around brackets and pipe routes, with any decorating agreed in your quote
- Balancing every radiator so each room heats evenly
Extensions and kitchen-diners around Chelsea with large glazed areas get their own radiator calculation.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
Homes in Chelsea can use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which takes £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump when it replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating. Replacing oil or LPG heating qualifies for £9,000 for installations from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, and air-to-air systems for £2,500. The MCS-certified installer named in your quote applies for the grant and deducts it from the price.
Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.
Heat pump radiators prices in Chelsea
Guide prices for Chelsea and the rest of Greater London are shown below, installed and inc VAT. We publish ranges rather than a single figure because design details move the price, and the written quote after survey fixes it.
| Work | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Replacement radiator, sized for a heat pump (each, fitted) | £280–£500 |
| Upgrade of about 10 radiators | £2,250–£5,600 |
| Pipework upgrade (e.g. microbore to larger bore) | £1,700–£3,900 |
Installed, inc VAT. The survey lists which radiators need changing.
Designing for Chelsea's winters
Chelsea sees roughly 7 hours 50 minutes of daylight in late December against 16 hours 38 minutes in June. Milder southern winters suit heat pumps well, though the system is still sized for a cold snap rather than an average day.

Heat pump radiator upgrades in Chelsea: questions
How long does a heat pump survey take in Chelsea?
A home survey in Chelsea usually takes one to two hours. The surveyor measures every heated room, checks windows, walls and radiators, and looks at where the outdoor unit and cylinder can go.
How long does installation take in Chelsea?
Most installations take 2–4 days on site. Jobs with several radiator changes or new pipework take longer, and your quote for a Chelsea home states the expected time.
How soon can you survey a home in Chelsea?
Survey dates depend on how busy installers are in Greater London. We offer the next available dates when you enquire and confirm them in writing.
How much does a heat pump radiator cost?
A replacement radiator sized for a heat pump has a guide price of £250–£450 each, installed and including VAT. Upgrading about ten radiators in a typical home has a guide price of £2,000–£5,000. The final price is fixed in your written quote after the survey, once the radiator schedule shows exactly which radiators change.
Do I need new radiators for a heat pump?
Not necessarily: many homes keep most of their radiators and replace only a few. The heat loss survey checks each room against its existing radiator at the planned flow temperature. Rooms with large windows, high ceilings or extensions are the usual candidates for an upgrade, while bedrooms often need no change. Your radiator schedule lists every decision.
