Heat pump radiators in Dover: what to expect
Most homes can run on a heat pump if the system is designed properly, and Dover is no different. The key is matching the heat pump and radiators to the home's heat loss.
Many older houses in Dover still have their original single-panel radiators, so the survey checks each one against the room it heats. Extensions and kitchen-diners around Dover with large glazed areas get their own radiator calculation.
We size each radiator to your room-by-room heat loss so a heat pump can heat your home at a low, efficient flow temperature.
- Rooms that already feel slow to heat, such as bay-windowed living rooms
- Homes switching from a gas, oil or LPG boiler to a heat pump
- Rooms with little wall space, where a fan-assisted radiator fits better
What's included
- Draining, refilling, cleaning and inhibitor treatment of the heating system
- Balancing every radiator so each room heats evenly
- Pipework checks and any agreed pipe upgrades
- Supply and fitting of new radiators, valves and brackets
- Making good around brackets and pipe routes, with any decorating agreed in your quote
Radiator fitting in Dover is scheduled with your heat pump installation so the system is drained only once.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Dover quote.
Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.
Guide prices for heat pump radiator upgrades in Dover
Guide prices for Dover and the rest of Kent are shown below, installed and inc VAT. We publish ranges rather than a single figure because design details move the price, and the written quote after survey fixes it.
| Work | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Replacement radiator, sized for a heat pump (each, fitted) | £260–£460 |
| Upgrade of about 10 radiators | £2,050–£5,150 |
| Pipework upgrade (e.g. microbore to larger bore) | £1,550–£3,600 |
Installed, inc VAT. The survey lists which radiators need changing.
Winter daylight and heating in Dover
Dover sees roughly 7 hours 53 minutes of daylight in late December against 16 hours 34 minutes in June. Milder southern winters suit heat pumps well, though the system is still sized for a cold snap rather than an average day.

Heat pump radiator upgrades in Dover: questions
What size heat pump does a Dover home need?
It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your Dover home.
Where would the outdoor unit go on a Dover house?
Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Dover home.
How long does installation take in Dover?
Most installations take 2–4 days on site. Jobs with several radiator changes or new pipework take longer, and your quote for a Dover home states the expected time.
Will new radiators be much bigger than my old ones?
Sometimes, but not always. Swapping a single-panel radiator for a double or triple-panel model of the same height and width can raise output substantially, adding only depth from the wall. Where that is not enough, a longer or taller radiator, or a second radiator in the room, may be needed. We agree sizes and positions with you before anything is ordered.
Can radiators be changed without draining the whole system?
Radiator changes normally mean draining the heating system, which is why they are usually done as part of the heat pump installation. The system is then refilled, flushed, treated with inhibitor and balanced. Doing the radiators at the same time avoids draining twice and means the new radiators are commissioned with the heat pump.
