Before you book: heat pump radiator upgrades in Chard
The question for a Chard home is rarely whether a heat pump can work, but what needs to change to make it work well: radiator sizes, pipework, controls and where the unit goes.
Many older houses in Chard still have their original single-panel radiators, so the survey checks each one against the room it heats. In Chard, bay-windowed front rooms are often the rooms that need a larger radiator when moving to a heat pump.
We size each radiator to your room-by-room heat loss so a heat pump can heat your home at a low, efficient flow temperature.
- Rooms with little wall space, where a fan-assisted radiator fits better
- Rooms that already feel slow to heat, such as bay-windowed living rooms
- Homes switching from a gas, oil or LPG boiler to a heat pump
What's included
- Making good around brackets and pipe routes, with any decorating agreed in your quote
- Draining, refilling, cleaning and inhibitor treatment of the heating system
- Balancing every radiator so each room heats evenly
- Supply and fitting of new radiators, valves and brackets
- Pipework checks and any agreed pipe upgrades
Extensions and kitchen-diners around Chard with large glazed areas get their own radiator calculation.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Chard quote.
Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.
What to budget for heat pump radiator upgrades in Chard
These are guide prices for Somerset, installed and including VAT. Your final price is fixed in a written quote after the survey and depends on the heat loss of the house, the radiators that need changing and where the unit goes.
| Work | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Replacement radiator, sized for a heat pump (each, fitted) | £250–£450 |
| Upgrade of about 10 radiators | £2,000–£5,000 |
| Pipework upgrade (e.g. microbore to larger bore) | £1,500–£3,500 |
Installed, inc VAT. The survey lists which radiators need changing.
How long is the heating season in Chard?
On the shortest day Chard gets about 7 hours 56 minutes of daylight, and the winter sun reaches only around 16° above the horizon at noon. Winters this far south are milder than in most of the UK, which helps a heat pump run at low flow temperatures for much of the season.

Heat pump radiator upgrades in Chard: questions
Where would the outdoor unit go on a Chard house?
Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Chard home.
Can you service a heat pump in Chard that someone else installed?
Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Chard, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.
Do you cover Taunton as well as Chard?
Yes. We arrange surveys and installation in Taunton, which is about 11 miles north-west of Chard, and across Somerset.
How much does a heat pump radiator cost?
A replacement radiator sized for a heat pump has a guide price of £250–£450 each, installed and including VAT. Upgrading about ten radiators in a typical home has a guide price of £2,000–£5,000. The final price is fixed in your written quote after the survey, once the radiator schedule shows exactly which radiators change.
Are fan-assisted radiators noisy?
Fan-assisted radiators make a low, steady fan sound when running at higher output, and many have quieter settings for bedrooms at night. They are useful where wall space is short, such as a kitchen with few clear walls. They need a small electrical supply, which we plan into the installation if you choose them.
