What to know about heat pump repairs in Wigan
Whoever installed your heat pump, aftercare can be arranged in Wigan. Tell us the make and model and roughly how old it is, and we will set out what the visit involves before you book.
For repeated faults in Wigan, the engineer looks at the system design as well as the failed part. Heat pump owners in Wigan can arrange a fault-finding visit at a rate agreed before an engineer attends.
When a heat pump shows an error, loses pressure or stops heating, an engineer diagnoses the cause and explains the repair and its cost before fixing it.
- Heat pumps showing an error code or fault light
- Heat pumps installed by another company that need a second opinion
- Rooms or hot water not getting warm enough
What's included
- System refill, venting and recommissioning after the repair
- Refrigerant repairs by an F-gas certified engineer where needed
- Supply and fitting of replacement parts
- Reading of error history and operating data
- A clear explanation of the fault and a price for the repair before work goes ahead
Across Wigan and Greater Manchester, refrigerant repairs on split systems are carried out by an F-gas certified engineer.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
In England the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027), and since 28 April 2026 a valid EPC is no longer needed. The grant is applied for by the MCS-certified installer and shown as a deduction on your Wigan quote.

Short winter days in Wigan and what they mean
On the shortest day Wigan gets only about 7 hours 27 minutes of daylight and the noon sun sits around 13° above the horizon. Northern winters tend to be longer, so a well-designed, efficient system matters more here because it runs for more of the year.

Heat pump repairs in Wigan: questions
Will the engineer need access indoors as well as outside?
Usually yes. The outdoor unit, the hot water cylinder, the controls and the pipework and valves indoors are all part of the visit, so allow access to each.
What should I check before booking a visit in Wigan?
Note any error code on the controller, check the system pressure gauge if you have one, and make sure the outdoor unit is clear of leaves or snow. Photos of the unit and controller help.
Do you also cover Golborne?
Yes. We arrange heat pump servicing and repairs in Golborne, which is about 5 miles south of Wigan, and across Greater Manchester.
Do refrigerant repairs need a specialist?
Yes. Any work on a heat pump's refrigerant circuit, such as tracing a leak, replacing a component or re-gassing, must by law be done by an F-gas certified engineer where the refrigerant is fluorinated, such as R32; units using R290 (propane) need an engineer trained in flammable refrigerants. On split systems the refrigerant runs through pipes inside your home, so leaks there are more likely than on sealed monobloc units.
Is ice on my heat pump a fault?
Some frost on the outdoor unit in cold, damp weather is normal, and the unit clears it with regular defrost cycles, often releasing a little vapour. It becomes a fault when thick ice builds up and does not clear, or when ice blocks the fan. That can point to poor airflow, a failed sensor, drainage problems or low refrigerant, and needs checking.
