Oil and LPG boiler replacement for Cardigan homes

A heat pump suits most Cardigan homes, but the details decide how efficiently it runs. Our survey looks at insulation, radiators and hot water use room by room.

Cottages and farmhouses in and around Cardigan often have solid walls, so the survey looks closely at construction and draughts. For homes outside Cardigan reached by a long drive or narrow lane, delivery of the unit and cylinder is planned in advance.

Off-gas homes have a lot to plan when switching to a heat pump: the fuel tank, older walls, rural power supplies and higher heat loss.

  • Eligible homes in England and Wales within the higher grant window
  • Rural and village homes off the mains gas grid
  • Detached houses and bungalows with garden space for the unit

What's included

  • Free survey with a detailed heat loss calculation for older construction
  • Oil tank draining and removal or making safe, as set out in your quote
  • Help arranging LPG tank collection with your supplier
  • Outdoor unit, heat pump cylinder, controls and radiator changes
  • MCS certificate and grant application in England and Wales where eligible

Rural properties near Cardigan usually have garden space for the outdoor unit, sited away from windows and sheltered where possible.

Grants and rules for heat pumps in Wales

Wales

In Wales the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027; £2,500 for air-to-air). The MCS-certified installer named in your quote applies to Ofgem for you, and the grant comes off your Cardigan quote.

There is no VAT on installing a heat pump anywhere in the UK, Wales included, until 31 March 2027. Planning rules for heat pumps in Wales are set by the Welsh Government and differ from England's, so the surveyor checks the unit position against them.

Replacing an oil or LPG boiler with a heat pump in Cardigan: questions

Can you service a heat pump in Cardigan that someone else installed?

Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Cardigan, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.

Where would the outdoor unit go on a Cardigan house?

Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Cardigan home.

Do you cover Fishguard as well as Cardigan?

Yes. We arrange surveys and installation in Fishguard, which is about 15 miles south-west of Cardigan, and across Dyfed.

Can a heat pump cope with an exposed rural spot?

Yes. Air source heat pumps are designed to keep working well below freezing, and they periodically defrost, giving off a little vapour, which is normal. In exposed locations the installer chooses a sheltered position where possible, raises the unit to clear snow and let defrost water drain, and sizes the system for the local winter design temperature used in the heat loss calculation.

How much is the grant for replacing an oil boiler with a heat pump?

In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is £9,000 when an air-to-water heat pump replaces oil or LPG heating, for installations from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. Otherwise the standard £7,500 applies. The installer claims it and deducts it from your quote. Scotland's Home Energy Scotland funding works differently and includes extra for eligible rural homes; Northern Ireland has no dedicated homeowner scheme at present.
