What to know about replacing an oil or LPG boiler with a heat pump in Fishguard
Homes around Fishguard range from older terraces to newer estates, and each needs a different design. That is why we survey before we quote.
If your home near Fishguard is off the mains gas grid, a heat pump removes the need for oil or LPG deliveries. Bungalows and detached houses near Fishguard running on LPG can move to a heat pump, with the tank collected by the supplier.
Off-gas homes have a lot to plan when switching to a heat pump: the fuel tank, older walls, rural power supplies and higher heat loss.
- Owners tired of fuel deliveries and tank maintenance
- Rural and village homes off the mains gas grid
- Older oil boilers nearing the end of their life
What's included
- Free survey with a detailed heat loss calculation for older construction
- Oil tank draining and removal or making safe, as set out in your quote
- Outdoor unit, heat pump cylinder, controls and radiator changes
- Network operator notification and electrical connection
- MCS certificate and grant application in England and Wales where eligible
Rural properties near Fishguard usually have garden space for the outdoor unit, sited away from windows and sheltered where possible.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in Wales
In Wales the Boiler Upgrade Scheme gives £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil or LPG, from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027; £2,500 for air-to-air). The MCS-certified installer named in your quote applies to Ofgem for you, and the grant comes off your Fishguard quote.
Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Wales has its own permitted development rules for air source heat pumps, so we check what applies to your property, including listed building and conservation-area constraints, at the survey.

Short winter days in Fishguard and what they mean
Fishguard has about 7 hours 44 minutes of daylight at midwinter and 16 hours 44 minutes at midsummer. That swing matters if you pair a heat pump with solar panels: summer generation can cover much of the hot water, winter generation far less.

Replacing an oil or LPG boiler with a heat pump in Fishguard: questions
Where would the outdoor unit go on a Fishguard house?
Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Fishguard home.
How long does installation take in Fishguard?
Most installations take 2–4 days on site. Jobs with several radiator changes or new pipework take longer, and your quote for a Fishguard home states the expected time.
How soon can you survey a home in Fishguard?
Survey dates depend on how busy installers are in Dyfed. We offer the next available dates when you enquire and confirm them in writing.
How much is the grant for replacing an oil boiler with a heat pump?
In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is £9,000 when an air-to-water heat pump replaces oil or LPG heating, for installations from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. Otherwise the standard £7,500 applies. The installer claims it and deducts it from your quote. Scotland's Home Energy Scotland funding works differently and includes extra for eligible rural homes; Northern Ireland has no dedicated homeowner scheme at present.
Can a heat pump cope with an exposed rural spot?
Yes. Air source heat pumps are designed to keep working well below freezing, and they periodically defrost, giving off a little vapour, which is normal. In exposed locations the installer chooses a sheltered position where possible, raises the unit to clear snow and let defrost water drain, and sizes the system for the local winter design temperature used in the heat loss calculation.
