Before you book: heat loss surveys in Reading
Most homes can run on a heat pump if the system is designed properly, and Reading is no different. The key is matching the heat pump and radiators to the home's heat loss.
Houses in Reading built in different eras can need very different heat pump sizes, which is why each is calculated room by room. For Reading homes with extensions or loft conversions, each part of the house is assessed on its own construction.
Every heat pump we quote starts with a room-by-room heat loss survey, free with installation enquiries and also available as a stand-alone report.
- Homeowners planning insulation or building work who want to know the effect on heat demand
- Self-builders and architects who need emitter and system sizes early
- Anyone getting a heat pump quote, as the first step
What's included
- Room-by-room heat loss calculation using the MCS method
- Radiator schedule with any upgrades needed for each room
- Recommended heat pump size and design flow temperature
- Electrical supply and network operator notes
- Written results in your quote, or a stand-alone report if you order one
The survey in Reading includes a check of where the outdoor unit could sit and how its sound would reach neighbours.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
Homes in Reading can use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which takes £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump when it replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating. Replacing oil or LPG heating qualifies for £9,000 for installations from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, and air-to-air systems for £2,500. The MCS-certified installer named in your quote applies for the grant and deducts it from the price.
Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.

Designing for Reading's winters
On the shortest day Reading gets about 7 hours 50 minutes of daylight, and the winter sun reaches only around 15° above the horizon at noon. Winters this far south are milder than in most of the UK, which helps a heat pump run at low flow temperatures for much of the season.

Heat loss surveys in Reading: questions
Do I need new radiators for a heat pump in Reading?
Often some, not all. Heat pumps run best at lower water temperatures, so rooms with small radiators may need larger ones. The survey of your Reading home gives a room-by-room list.
Do you cover Lower Earley as well as Reading?
Yes. We arrange surveys and installation in Lower Earley, which is about 3 miles south-east of Reading, and across Berkshire.
How long does installation take in Reading?
Most installations take 2–4 days on site. Jobs with several radiator changes or new pipework take longer, and your quote for a Reading home states the expected time.
Will the survey check noise from the outdoor unit?
Yes. The surveyor identifies possible positions for the outdoor unit and carries out the MCS noise assessment, which estimates the sound level at the nearest neighbouring window from the unit's sound power level, distance and any barriers. In England, meeting the MCS planning standards is one of the conditions for permitted development. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules, which we check.
Can I use the heat loss report to get other quotes?
Yes. A stand-alone heat loss report is yours to use, including sharing it with other installers so their quotes are based on the same figures. Comparing quotes like for like makes it easier to see differences in equipment, radiator upgrades and workmanship terms. The report states the assumptions used wherever construction could not be confirmed.
