Heat pump radiators for Exeter homes
The question for an Exeter home is rarely whether a heat pump can work, but what needs to change to make it work well: radiator sizes, pipework, controls and where the unit goes.
We plan radiator upgrades in Exeter so floorboards are lifted only where pipework genuinely needs changing. Extensions and kitchen-diners around Exeter with large glazed areas get their own radiator calculation.
We size each radiator to your room-by-room heat loss so a heat pump can heat your home at a low, efficient flow temperature.
- Homes switching from a gas, oil or LPG boiler to a heat pump
- Rooms that already feel slow to heat, such as bay-windowed living rooms
- Extensions and loft conversions with large areas of glazing
What's included
- Making good around brackets and pipe routes, with any decorating agreed in your quote
- A radiator schedule showing which radiators stay, which change and their outputs
- Draining, refilling, cleaning and inhibitor treatment of the heating system
- Supply and fitting of new radiators, valves and brackets
- Pipework checks and any agreed pipe upgrades
Radiator fitting in Exeter is scheduled with your heat pump installation so the system is drained only once.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
Homes in Exeter can use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which takes £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump when it replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating. Replacing oil or LPG heating qualifies for £9,000 for installations from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, and air-to-air systems for £2,500. The MCS-certified installer named in your quote applies for the grant and deducts it from the price.
Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.
What to budget for heat pump radiator upgrades in Exeter
Guide prices for Exeter and the rest of Devon are shown below, installed and inc VAT. We publish ranges rather than a single figure because design details move the price, and the written quote after survey fixes it.
| Work | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Replacement radiator, sized for a heat pump (each, fitted) | £250–£450 |
| Upgrade of about 10 radiators | £2,000–£5,050 |
| Pipework upgrade (e.g. microbore to larger bore) | £1,500–£3,550 |
Installed, inc VAT. The survey lists which radiators need changing.
Designing for Exeter's winters
Exeter sees roughly 7 hours 57 minutes of daylight in late December against 16 hours 30 minutes in June. Milder southern winters suit heat pumps well, though the system is still sized for a cold snap rather than an average day.
What happens after you enquire in Exeter?
- Send your postcode and a few details, or use the guide price tool.
- A surveyor visits your Exeter home, measures every room and checks where the outdoor unit can go.
- You receive a heat loss design and a fixed written quote, with any grant shown where it applies.
- Installers fit the unit, cylinder and any radiator changes, typically over 2–4 days on site.
- The system is commissioned, set up with weather compensation and handed over with the paperwork.
Heat pump radiator upgrades in Exeter: questions
Where would the outdoor unit go on an Exeter house?
Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Exeter home.
Do you cover Crediton as well as Exeter?
Yes. We arrange surveys and installation in Crediton, which is about 7 miles north-west of Exeter, and across Devon.
Can you service a heat pump in Exeter that someone else installed?
Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Exeter, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.
Will new radiators be much bigger than my old ones?
Sometimes, but not always. Swapping a single-panel radiator for a double or triple-panel model of the same height and width can raise output substantially, adding only depth from the wall. Where that is not enough, a longer or taller radiator, or a second radiator in the room, may be needed. We agree sizes and positions with you before anything is ordered.
Are fan-assisted radiators noisy?
Fan-assisted radiators make a low, steady fan sound when running at higher output, and many have quieter settings for bedrooms at night. They are useful where wall space is short, such as a kitchen with few clear walls. They need a small electrical supply, which we plan into the installation if you choose them.
