Heat pump radiators in Oxford: what to expect
A heat pump suits most Oxford homes, but the details decide how efficiently it runs. Our survey looks at insulation, radiators and hot water use room by room.
Many older houses in Oxford still have their original single-panel radiators, so the survey checks each one against the room it heats. We plan radiator upgrades in Oxford so floorboards are lifted only where pipework genuinely needs changing.
We size each radiator to your room-by-room heat loss so a heat pump can heat your home at a low, efficient flow temperature.
- Extensions and loft conversions with large areas of glazing
- Rooms that already feel slow to heat, such as bay-windowed living rooms
- Homes switching from a gas, oil or LPG boiler to a heat pump
What's included
- Pipework checks and any agreed pipe upgrades
- Draining, refilling, cleaning and inhibitor treatment of the heating system
- Room-by-room heat loss figures for every heated room
- Balancing every radiator so each room heats evenly
- A radiator schedule showing which radiators stay, which change and their outputs
Radiator fitting in Oxford is scheduled with your heat pump installation so the system is drained only once.
Grants and rules for heat pumps in England
Homes in Oxford can use the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which takes £7,500 off the cost of an air source heat pump when it replaces fossil-fuel or electric heating. Replacing oil or LPG heating qualifies for £9,000 for installations from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, and air-to-air systems for £2,500. The MCS-certified installer named in your quote applies for the grant and deducts it from the price.
Installing heat pumps is zero-rated for VAT across the UK until 31 March 2027. Since 29 May 2025, permitted development in England allows up to two air source heat pumps on a house, each up to 1.5 m³, with no blanket 1 m boundary rule — the installation must still meet the MCS planning standards, including the noise check. Listed buildings, flats and some conservation-area positions need extra consent, which we check at survey.
What to budget for heat pump radiator upgrades in Oxford
These are guide prices for Oxfordshire, installed and including VAT. Your final price is fixed in a written quote after the survey and depends on the heat loss of the house, the radiators that need changing and where the unit goes.
| Work | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Replacement radiator, sized for a heat pump (each, fitted) | £260–£470 |
| Upgrade of about 10 radiators | £2,100–£5,200 |
| Pipework upgrade (e.g. microbore to larger bore) | £1,550–£3,650 |
Installed, inc VAT. The survey lists which radiators need changing.
Designing for Oxford's winters
On the shortest day Oxford gets about 7 hours 47 minutes of daylight, with the noon sun around 15° up. The heating season runs from autumn into spring, so a heat pump that is sized correctly and set up with weather compensation does most of its work in steady, cool conditions.

Heat pump radiator upgrades in Oxford: questions
What size heat pump does an Oxford home need?
It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your Oxford home.
Do I need new radiators for a heat pump in Oxford?
Often some, not all. Heat pumps run best at lower water temperatures, so rooms with small radiators may need larger ones. The survey of your Oxford home gives a room-by-room list.
How soon can you survey a home in Oxford?
Survey dates depend on how busy installers are in Oxfordshire. We offer the next available dates when you enquire and confirm them in writing.
Can radiators be changed without draining the whole system?
Radiator changes normally mean draining the heating system, which is why they are usually done as part of the heat pump installation. The system is then refilled, flushed, treated with inhibitor and balanced. Doing the radiators at the same time avoids draining twice and means the new radiators are commissioned with the heat pump.
Will new radiators be much bigger than my old ones?
Sometimes, but not always. Swapping a single-panel radiator for a double or triple-panel model of the same height and width can raise output substantially, adding only depth from the wall. Where that is not enough, a longer or taller radiator, or a second radiator in the room, may be needed. We agree sizes and positions with you before anything is ordered.
