Grants and rules for heat pumps in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland does not have a dedicated heat pump grant for homeowners at present, and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not apply here. Heat pumps have sometimes been funded through the Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme, so it is worth checking what is open when you enquire about a home in Magherafelt.
Installing heat pumps has been zero-rated for VAT in Northern Ireland since 1 May 2023, in line with the rest of the UK, until 31 March 2027. Northern Ireland has its own permitted development rules and building regulations, and we confirm what applies to your Magherafelt property at survey.

How long is the heating season in Magherafelt?
On the shortest day Magherafelt gets only about 7 hours 13 minutes of daylight and the noon sun sits around 12° above the horizon. Northern winters tend to be longer, so a well-designed, efficient system matters more here because it runs for more of the year.
Heat pumps in Magherafelt: questions
Do you cover Maghera as well as Magherafelt?
Yes. We arrange surveys and installation in Maghera, which is about 7 miles north of Magherafelt, and across County Londonderry.
Can you service a heat pump in Magherafelt that someone else installed?
Yes. We arrange servicing and repairs for most air source heat pumps in Magherafelt, whoever fitted them. Tell us the make and model when you book.
What size heat pump does a Magherafelt home need?
It depends on the heat loss, not the postcode. As a rough guide, a 3 bedroom semi often needs 6–9 kW, but the room-by-room survey sets the actual size for your Magherafelt home.
Where would the outdoor unit go on a Magherafelt house?
Usually at the side or rear, on a level base with space around it for airflow and servicing, away from bedroom windows where possible. The surveyor checks positions at your Magherafelt home.
