Annual servicing is recommended for all heat pumps, and many manufacturers make it a condition of their warranty. A service record also helps if you sell the home or need to make a warranty claim. The service is a paid visit with a guide price of £120–£250, including VAT, and the price for your system is confirmed when you book.
Landlords in Ayrshire can arrange servicing for several properties, with a dated record for each. Heat pumps in Ayrshire that sit near trees or hedges often need their outdoor coil cleared of leaves at the annual service. Homes in Ayrshire and across Ayrshire can book servicing at a time of year that suits them, ideally before winter.
Who it suits
- Homes where running costs have crept up or rooms feel cooler than before
- Heat pumps a year or more past installation
- Landlords who need dated service records for each property
- Systems where the manufacturer's warranty requires annual servicing
Grants and rules for heat pumps in Scotland
In Scotland, heat pump funding comes through Home Energy Scotland rather than the Boiler Upgrade Scheme: a grant of up to £7,500 (up to £1,500 extra for eligible rural and island homes) and an optional interest-free loan of up to £7,500. For a home in Ayrshire, apply and receive the written offer before the installation date is fixed.

Heat pump servicing questions
Is servicing needed to keep my warranty valid?
Often, yes. Many manufacturer warranties require an annual service with a dated record, and some extended warranties require an approved installer. Manufacturer warranties pass to you, and the length depends on the make and model. Check your warranty documents, and keep every service record safe with your MCS certificate and handover pack.
How often should a heat pump be serviced?
Once a year is the usual recommendation for air source heat pumps, and many manufacturers require it as a warranty condition. An annual visit cleans filters and strainers, checks pressures and controls, and tests the unvented cylinder's safety devices. If you notice a drop in performance, unusual noises or repeated error codes between services, arrange a visit sooner.
Can you service a split system?
Yes. Split systems have refrigerant pipes running between the outdoor unit and an indoor unit, and checks on that refrigerant circuit must be done by an F-gas certified engineer. We arrange the service so a suitably certified engineer attends. The water side, controls and cylinder are checked in the same visit, just as on a monobloc system.
Do I need to do anything between services?
A little. Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear of leaves, snow, plants and stored items so air flows freely. Check the system pressure gauge occasionally if you have one, and note any error codes. Avoid covering the unit or building an enclosure around it without advice, as this can reduce performance.
